Grade 3/4 Drama Club Performs: The Legend of the Blue Sapphire

On Friday, February 23, the Grades 3/4 Drama Club performed  The Legend of the Blue Sapphire to a packed house. We are all extremely proud of all the participants and appreciate that our community continues to support this flexible learning opportunity for our students.

"My favorite part is when I am sifting the sand to look for gold."
"My favorite part of the play is when Addie gives her speech about controlling time."

The Fairfax Town School District has maintained a strong commitment to the arts for many decades. It is an important component of our learning community and we take great pride in showcasing the many talents of our student body.

"My favorite part is when everyone travels to Scotland and everyone is talking and someone has to yell 'Be quiet!”
"My favorite part is changing the scene from Gold Rush to Scotland.  I also like when I get to be Nessie and give the sapphire to Saturn."

I am a proponent of authentic and flexible learning opportunities. As we know, we often learn by doing, as well as through taking healthy risks. I am so proud of our students who participated in this year’s play. In addition to learning about performing on stage, our students acquired knowledge and skills regarding set design, backstage roles and responsibilities, and painting sets. Equally as important, our students practiced using lifelong skills such as effective communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Not only are these skills necessary for a successful performance, but more importantly they are skills that students will continue to use throughout their educational and career experiences.

"Painting and helping with the stage crew was fun!"
"Drama Club was so much fun!  I'm glad that I was a part of it!"

I would like to extend a big thank you to Jennifer Kalbfliesch, Juliet and Cordelia King, and Sarah Wolff for the time, efforts, and commitment to supporting our students in this learning opportunity, as well as supporting the arts in our greater community.  We hope you all have a fantastic, restful, and much-deserved February break.
